I checked my messages the other day while on a much deserved
vacation... I had several from my businesses ISP informing me that I
was running and open relay and unless I acted immediately my connection
would be "Quarentined"...  I was not sure what that meant, but could
not think of anything good.  I would also have been incredibly
embarrassed if I had the outbound relay open to the outside world...  

In the conversations that followed it took me several attempts to
convince them that it was not an open relay, but spamd.  I am not sure,
even now, that they understand.

In the end, it turns out thier system simply connects, sets the from
and to and if it gets an okay it simply marks you as an open relay and
recommends hostile action.  It does not look at, or even display to the
people there the information that is put out on each line (the funny
stuff).  Or even try to send it fully.

Today I mailed them my statistics for it.

Just something to think of when you have this discussion with your
provider...
