[image: headshot of april lathrom]The Springfield City Council and City
employees are deeply saddened to announce the death of Internal Auditor
April McHaffie Lathrom, who was 36.

April died Thursday evening at St. John’s Hospital after battling an
aggressive type of cancer since late summer. April is survived by her
husband, Grant, and two children, Caleb and Sydney.

A certified public accountant, April was named the City’s Internal Auditor
in August 2008 and reported directly to the City Council. She had previously
worked as a senior auditor in the Missouri State Auditor’s Springfield
office. She held bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Missouri State
University.

Visitation and funeral services will be held at Barnes Family Funeral Home
in Ozark, Missouri. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m., Monday, March 1,
2010, and funeral services have been scheduled for 10 a.m., Tuesday, March
2, 2010. Interment will follow at Hillcrest Cemetery in Mountain Grove,
Missouri.

“April wanted to thank all the employees of the City of Springfield that
provided support and prayers,” Grant Lathrom said. “The availability of the
City’s Care Leave Program allowed her to maintain her benefits eligibility
during her fight and she was very grateful for their generosity. April
believed the City’s support, which allowed her to participate in clinical
trials in the last six months, provided her additional quality time with her
family.”

Donations can be made to the Caleb and Sydney Benefit Fund in care of
Citizen’s Bank of Rogersville.

The Lathrom family has requested privacy at this time and will not be
accepting or returning calls for comment. The City asks that members of the
media please honor this request and the City also will have no further
statement.
