I recently created a small Qt test application and for this case minimizing and
maximizing the application window works. So this seems to be an MITK issue.
Unfortunately we currently do not have the resources to work on this issue.
Especially since there are more urgent bugs to fix for

if you are on a Mac, and are running an MITK based application and have
"minimize windows into application icon" checked in the Doc system preferences
then if you minimise the application, you can't then maximise it.
