appears to accept the site certificate, so I don't know what broke.
Can anyone suggest the best areas to check, and how to check them?

Sorry to follow up to my own message, but it works fine when the
server is running in single user mode (started with
/usr/local/apache/bin/httpd -X). Can anyone suggest solutions to
