Has anyone seen these type of errors before and if so how can the problem be

It really sounds like keepalive is turned on. Can you verify that keep
alive is turned off? Disable keepalive for the entire server if need be.

I have the same problem with apache 1.3.6, openssl 0.9.2b and modssl
2.2.8
on both solaris 2.5.1 sparc and aix 4.3.2.
An upgrade to openssl 0.9.3a and modssl 2.3.5 doesn't help.
I have posted more details/debug log in bug database, open number 198.
