OK, got it working. It's definitely better - at least the message is preserved,
though the stack trace still isn't useful.

FYI, to reproduce in MD, reintroduce the original MD bug by editing
main/src/addins/AspNet/MonoDevelop.AspNet.Mvc/Gui/Folder
