One of our Mopo members just sent me this email, which confirms what I wrote
later. In other words, being a good Samaritan can indeed result in your

I believe it is a violation of eBay policy to contact any member with

Hi all
I was under the impression that any of us can be thrown off ebay precisely
for contacting a buyer and warning him about something like this.
Anybody know anything about this ebay policy?

Kirby,
I agree that one should not contact other people's bidders --
unless there is a clear case of fraud being commited against those
bidders by the seller. Then I think that if we notice what's going down
and just stand by and say nothing that we are as culpable as those who
watch any other crime being commited but say or do nothing. In this case,
the seller may know know the item is not original, but he is clearly
stating that it is --
even going so far as to claim that the frame it is in is "the frame that
it hung in the movie theaters" -- and then he quotes the size as being
slightly smaller than 11x17 (!) So, I don't even this this is a Porta
repro. I thought all Portals were full-size? I have no idea what this
thing is, but from the small low-res photo it looks like some kind of
poster-shop item printed up and sold over the counter a long time ago.
So, who knows if the seller is just being ignorant or deliberately
misleading in his description, but I think it is perfectly a!
cceptable for people to contact both the buyer and the seller in a
situation like this and let them know that no way is this an "original"
theatrical movie poster.

In that material last week on ebay - the seller in Florida who had all
the Betty Grable posters - MOON OVER MIAMI et al -
there was a repro Belgian GILDA that hit $250.00 or so. Did any of you
guys alert the buyer? As a dealer I am reluctant
to e-mail other people's bidders. I did e-mail the seller, and suggest
that when the auction was over, he simply sell
the poster to him for ten bucks or so.

I find it surprising that some people don't even care if something is a
reproduction and not an original. Like the half sheet Portal
reproductions from "The Wizard Of Oz" that were on e-bay a few months
back. The seller was honest and forthright about them and the buyer knew
what they were after being informed. But the buyer still wanted them and
paid a hefty price for them. Not in the least bit caring what they were.
He thought they were attractive. Go figure.
