I Restore vintage posters of all types, not only movie posters. Offhand about 50% of my customers are females. They tend to collect more decorative posters, such as those by Cappiello, Cheret and artists like that. The art work on movie posters goes from sublime to so soto simply bad- and the adoration of American Heros, who are usually men in old movies, is appealing to men.  The strong female roles  ( Joan Crawford) dont even seem to have long lasting poster appeal--at leaste to women --that John Wayne posters have for men. I know of  almost no female movie poster dealers.

Some top females in the poster world:

The Barber Shop posters I had from the 1890s were all collected by a female. I will not mention her name.

The biggest and best dealer of Military Posters is Mel Mehan, a female in New York

The best dealer of American/European Vintage posters is Nancy Steinbock, many if not all of her customers are female. The prices these dealers get can be quite high- upwards of $30,000 poer poster. And I am proud to have them as customers. There are many more. Laura Gold, Peggy Bronstein, etc. They wouldn't be caught dead with a movie poster.

Subject: [MOPO] what do YOU think is the reason there are far more men than women in this hobby?

I know that movie poster collecting is mostly a male hobby, but I would estimate I have between 5% and 10% females among my 30,000 customers, and I wonder how many female collectors post here on MoPo.

I also wonder if any of the females here have an opinion as to WHY there are so many more male collectors than female. After all, I see nothing at all gender based in this hobby, unlike say baseball cards, where all the players are men. There are certainly a lot of movies that appeal more to women than men, and I would think a high percentage of movies are completely "gender neutral" (appeal equally to men and women).

So what do YOU think is the reason there are far more men than women in this hobby?

Thanks!

Bruce
