I agree with those offering a voice of reason with respect to (as yet)
unsubstantiated claims that Jaime Mendes was involved in the recent
forgeries uncovered in the Movie Poster hobby. Innuendo is not the same
as proof. Jaime has done several pieces for me in which the work was
impeccable. I hate to think that he might be denied a living without and
until proof is established.

Years ago, I sold specialty equipment to the Smithsonian, mass
spectrometry, which was to be used in verification and chemical analyses
of exhibit items to establish authenticity, age and chemical composition
in the Sackler Freer gallery, specifically, ancient Chinese and Japanese
lacquered items. If the Smithsonian can't establish authenticity of its
own collections without sophisticated analyses, than it is obvious that
some forms of art, including movie posters, will be very challenging to
verify.

Like others have said, this hobby will go on, especially since so many
of us have collected items we cherish but which have only a very modest
commercial value. As our hobby matures, it is probably inevitable that
some type of fraud would be attempted at some point in time.
