My mother always wondered throughout the 1950s if all American women vacuumed
the house wearing a string of pearls and earrings, and if all American children
called their father "sir" and not Dad, or Daddy (depending on their age) and if
not, why not, and what was wrong with Howard and June's marriage that they
slept in separate beds.
Ah, how times change.
