I think responding to text through writing is a way to teach thinking. The
read a loud engages us in verbal thinking, but children need to learn to
write to clarify their thinking as well. Part of independent reading in our
room is writing about their reading.

I've had some success with older students (5th-6th) and their parents in
book clubs held in the evening. We met once before reading the book and
once after reading the book. A group of students had created discussion
stop points for parents and students to use at home during the reading. At
the
Judith Viorst books are great - Alexander, also Judy Blume's The Pain and
The Great One and Patricia Polacco's My Rotten Red-Headed Older Brother.
