I write them myself. I try to include at least two words from the list (or
words with the pattern we are learning). I try to include the punctuation we

We were just informed that a new reading program was being purchased for us.
Did we get to see it? No Did we get to preview it? No Is it
something we want? I don’t know.
So……….I’m asking……has anyone heard of the Mondo program? I think I have
that right. Has anyone used it in first grade?
Mondo is the publishing house for Tony Stead's Should There Be Zoo's? Find out
who the consultants are.

When I test my fifth grade students, I have them write the headings for the
sorts they have been practicing. Then I call out 15 words, making sure to get
about the same number of words for each feature. They are scored for spelling
and sorting, which is a total of 30 points. That means a missort
The book should also have a DVD. Pop that puppy in your DVD player and you will
be good to go!

Thank you for the information. We are always looking to add to our
booklists. We get lists from our legislators as well. They do reading
programs in
the summer.

I also test my 2nd graders this way. They have 10 spelling sort words,
scored as follows:
+2 points: right sort column, right spelling
+1 point: right sort column, wrong spelling
+1 point: wrong sort column, right spelling
-1/2 point: reversed letters or inappropriate capital letters
I include 2 "c
Our system is very similar. 2 pts. correct spell and sort
1pt. correct spell wrong sort
0 pt spelled incorrectly.
I teach 3rd grade and if they turn their test book in and they are missing
one of the dictated words,
Basically I do the same thing as you, Bonita. I don't print on cardstock, the
kids seem to be just fine with regular paper. Each of my students put their
words in a zipper sandwich bag that the keep in a zippered puch in their

Hi everyone,
My administrator decided in the beginning of the year that it was okay for
us to forgo our purchased basal series (Open Court) and only use
literature in our readers workshop (woo hoo!!). Flash forward to now and
we are told that we must use them, whether it be for phonics, literature
We use Open Court and I've been trying to incorporate it with strategy
instruction but what grade do you teach??

I do it kind of like that with my firsties. Each word is worth 2 points: one
for spelling it right and one for putting it in the right category. So, that's
2 possible for each word I do give them 1 dictation sentence. Their score is a
percentage of the total.
