There are various ways you can use single issue magazines in your classroom. Make sure you use on a regular basis because many children don't have access to them at home. For the resistant readers, they offer a quick and colorful way to motivate with small amounts of information in block form. Use the pictures and captions to show students how much information can be obtained before reading any information in the articles. It's also possible to model reading strategies using magazines. Introduce the topic you are studying from a magazine, and then put students into their textbooks to practice.
A few years ago, I bought 14 copies of The Maya, 14 copies of The Aztecs, and 14 copies of The Incas from Discovery and intended to use them with partners each year. Unfortunately, they were pushed into my cabinets and forgotten about. I discovered them in a box when I was moving this year. Now I won't be teaching those subject areas anymore. I hate when I do that!!! -- Ann ski...@chartermi.net _______________________________________________ Mosaic mailing list Mosaic@literacyworkshop.org To unsubscribe or modify your membership please go to http://literacyworkshop.org/mailman/options/mosaic_literacyworkshop.org.
