Take a big book (or any favorite book), place a sticky note over the word...and
have them guess the covered word--describe which strategy they used and why.
Let them show you what to do when you get 'stuck' on a 'tricky word'it's that

My first thought is do students get much time to talk to one another and
use the new words they are learning. Some teachers put the new vocab on
their bulletin board near the bottom, and everytime Kids use it they
move it towards the top. Lots of turn and talk about the concepts,
helps. Are the k
WE use a combination of Data to determine who we work with: QRI for
older students, Running records for younger students, Aims Web, and Map
scores. I don't think it is wise to use only one assessment piece to
make a decision about students.

I totally agree that QRI is the best reading inventory I have used. The DRA is
not practical for the classroom as it takes so long and uses a LOT of paper
just for one student/one test. When it takes 8 sheets of paper to test one
student, that is excessive. I also feel like the DRA is more a
