When it comes to conferencing, the best advice I have to give is CAFE! I
was so lost before I found this book. It revolutionized how I teach and how my
reading time is organized. In 30 minutes, I can accomplish what used to take
me hours. I LOVE LOVE LOVE CAFE!
Don't be afraid to try something new, or to add or tweak something. One of the
greatest things about the workshop model is that it is virtually impossible to
make mistakes. Your students will guide you. Be responsive, do what makes
sense, and you really can not go wrong.

The best advice I have heard is "unless we are able to use and understand the
thinking strategies on a personal level we can't talk to others about them."
Kids know when you are being authentic. My suggestion is to really look at each
strategy and how you use it all day long. It really does hel
We use DRA and Marie Clay's Observation Survey for first graders. DRA gives us
the text level, and the observation survey gives us information on alphabet

Wanted to throw in my two cents about letting teachers share with each other
vs. professional dev. from an "expert". I think it probably depends a lot on
the school community. I love sharing ideas with colleagues as we chat at
lunch, but their focus and values are fairly different from mine.

Thanks. I taught mini-lessons either at the beginning of the time, or
at the end, or to individual students via conferencing

with the workshop model. Time is necessary, just like what our students need.

Help, Is their anyone using this program for testing? If so I would

Our school is adopting it next year, I also think the Chicago Board of
