Lori,
Have you thought about using books on CD so that these students could access
a higher level text? For the Holocaust theme I was thinking of Number the
Stars but I'm pretty sure it's a 5th grade reading level or higher. For
Friendship and Loss you might try A Taste of Blackberrie
an send my way!

YES! I started reading this book about a month ago and it's almost
overwhelming. It had really made me think-hard! I can't wait to join in on
the discussion. I've been reading the archived posts from the first group
and it's amazing to read all of their great insights.
Kendra,
If you have access to the Comprehension Toolkit the very first lesson is
great! It uses the book How Many Days to America by Eve Bunting. I just
taught that lesson this week to my 6th graders.

Kim,
The Comprehension Toolkit for grades 3-6 has a great lesson on monitoring
using How Many Days to America by Eve Bunting. It's great! I just used it
with my sixth graders.

Don't be embarrassed. I have really enjoyed reading what you have to say.
You have obviously done your homework. I just rejoined this e-mail group

It's interesting that you brought up the idea of using iPods or MP3 devices.
I'm already making plans to use them in my 6th grade reading class this next
year. Thanks for the website. I will definitely
you buy. Hope this helps! There is also a version of Adobe Acrobat
reader for palm that you can use to download e-books. Just some thoughts.
