Regarding the textbook adoption, we are piloting the Rigby program Literacy
by Design. It is a pretty comprehensive program with lots and lots of
leveled texts. It does a fantastic job of teaching comprehension. We have
worked on making connections quite a bit. It has been neat to watch the
students grow in this area. The word study component is so so. We are just
getting started though. It is worth checking out. I believe you can get
free samples from the website
 rigby.harcourtachieve.com/en-US/literacydesign_home.

Our county is beginning the?textbook adoption process for ELA/Reading. We
are working hard to help our teachers teach reading using Balanced Literacy.
Have any of you adopted materials that you feel really support the use of
Balanced Literacy? I have a sample of Celebration Press's "Good Habits,
Great Readers", which has?lots of guided reading support and shared reading
even through upper elementary. They?address good comprehension strategies
thorughout and it looks pretty good. Do you know of any other good
matierals??We don't necessarily need to adopt a basal, and in fact are
wanting to look "outside the box" on this and try to buy more leveled
readers as support for teachers if possible. But we nknow that new teachers
need support to help them organize their day. Any insights you can offer
would be greatly appreciated!

Keith,

I must have missed (overlooked) the info on how to be apart of the book
review. I had been watching for it to start, but only saw Elisa. Sorry
for the confusion. It was a great book and would like to add comments.

I'd like to remind everyone that the Mosaic archives are searchable:
http://snipurl.com/MosaicArchive.

This link is always at the footer of every message sent to you from this
list. The archives are a great way to revisit threads and glean ideas
for
teaching.

There are 35 matches for the word "comics":

I am so sorry to ask for this again, I must have deleted the
conversations
on teaching with comics. I know there were lots of ideas, websites,
books,
etc. mentioned, can you resubmit whatever you had mentioned earlier
about
using comics in the classroom, I am needing some ideas.

I just purchased Linda Hoyt's book on Interactive Read Alouds for 2/3 and
4/5. It provides teacher and kid friendly, well-balanced lessons to
strengthen specific comprehension skills. Each lesson begins with a read
aloud of a well-known picture book.

Scott Foresman Reading Street is a great program that supports the balanced
literacy model. It also contains above, below, and on grade level leveled
readers for each grade.

I might also add to what Erika posted; if you are expected to use a basal
series, Reading Street is a very tolerable one. Leveled readers, both high
and low, great selection of a variety of genre, and many supplemental
materials. I have been pleasantly pleased with the series.

I have been trying to locate a source for the approximately 8 x 8 white
metal trays with a lip used in reading recovery for magnetic letter work and
word building. Although we have checked several catalog sources, including
one commonly used by R.R., I have been unable to locate them. If any one
has a source, please share.

Thanks!

Just an idea, but I have used tin stove burner covers. You know the ones
your grandma most likely had that had something decorative like an apple on
it that was placed over each stove burner. You can find them in a set of 4
at most dollar stores. They are magnetic and you can write on them with
white board markers as well. The two smaller ones in the set are kind of a
waste but the two larger covers work great and are the perfect size!
