You are probably right! Are you looking for a common assessment, or are you trying to determine each student's instructional level? Just administering a 6th grade assessment to a whole group will give you instructional information about students who are reading at that level. Don't forget to look at what you have readily available, such as teacher observation, student work as well as state assessments.
