Folks, Just because we subscribe to the comprehensive literacy philosophy, and are committed to teaching the whole child, doesn't mean that we should ignore the best of what the DI people have to offer. For example, DIBELS is a pretty good assessment of where your whole class/school is and can be used to quickly identify who needs help. Granted DRA or Rigby does this too (and to a much greater depth), but DIBELS is a good screening tool to use 2-3 times per year to see how interventions and core instruction is going (we use DIBELS AND DRA - DIBELS for universal screening, and DRA for instructional decision-making). Also, the Positive Behavior Support programs from Horner and Sugai can transform how your school deals with behavior issues - helping your staff create a positive, supportive and acceptable peer culture within the building. My teachers are committed to balanced literacy, and we most certainly are not interested in any of the basal series promulgated by the Reading First people. However, there are some good tools being created by those who push the DI-only philosophy, and we shouldn't become closed-minded to what might help us do CL better. Just a thought.
