WTW is a fabulous, developmental word study program. The University of Virginia
(Donald Bear, etc) and Louisa Moats are behind it 100 percent. It helps with
reading and writing, since it operates on the child's developmental level.? You

The Comprehension Toolkit is great for overall strategy use and practice, but
it has a book specifically targeting synthesis. It comes with several titles as
well as the toolkit itself and a CD. It's from Heinemann.

I like to tell kids that they can look in 3 places to infer. They can look at
1. description 2. character actions and 3. character dialogue. I have found
that looking at these 3 and asking students to "think off the page" has helped
to make inferring more concrete. One of my favorite Read Aloud
