Hi,
I saw the question about vocabulary graphic organizers. The Frayer Model works
for working on a specific word and it is excellent, but I think you were
talking about something else I use.
Here is a site where you can see some organizers on word knowledge:
Hi Everyone,
I having been watching the posts, and I love what Laurie and Amy said about
scripted programs. For some students, Corrective reading or Reading Mastery are
the only programs that work. I also like what they said about scripted
programs being a tool and how you need to know the
I like Bev's idea of Comprehension Connections
(mcGregor). It is easy to implement right away. I also think that Daily Five
would be a good start. You mentioned class size and it combines management and
reading. It sounds like your teacher's have a lot to handle, and Comprehension
Kelley,
How about Ender's Game. We read it as adults, but I know some kids enjoying it.

the Daily Five has great information on creating Buddy Reading Charts. Also,
Debbie Diller's Practice with Purpose has good charts.
Also, I think there may be things on Reading Lady under the tools section.

Wendy,
We did this kind of grouping for almost ten years. It has pros and cons to it.
We did think it worked at the time. Some years we had 6 groups at a grade
level. Top, near top, middle, low middle, low, IEP. The low groups had low
numbers and the high group often had 25 kids in the

Myra,
I know this is off topic from reading, but we are using Envisions, too. You
are talking about the Scott Foresman Envisions, right? It is very difficult to
understand and you are right, it doesn't give kids time to understand. What
pieces do you use? You can e-mail me offline.
Thanks,
Hi Laura,

Kim,
Thanks for the post - I love the idea. I just wondered on the Unforgivable
list, do you start with those sight words printed or are they starting with
just the title and adding to the list?
Thanks,

Hi Everyone,
I am doing a presentation for a Reading First Workshop (I know how people
feel), and will be able to present how to add strategies with the core and with
independent reading. I only have 1 hour and am presenting with the teacher
that co-teaches with me. We are stressing the
I am very interested in reviewing Put Thinking in the Test, and would like to
know more about how to be included. I tried the last time, but without success.
I really want to be involved with this one.
Thanks,

Patricia Reilly Giff has a bunch of novels on this. It started with Nory
Ryan's Song and they are about the Irish famine and immigration to New York.
Also, the picture book - When Jessie Came Across the Sea by Amy Hest.
Hope this helps.

We were talking about The Pocket Book (integrated units) and I

which was in their Leprechaun Magic thematic unit. After reading some

Hi Sarah,
The Pocket Bock is a series of integrated primary units bases on
themes. It had a lot of chants, poems, literature extensions, games,
etc. It integretes everything into cute themes, bears, eggs,
butterflies, leprechauns, pumpkins, etc. I still use activities to

Hi Everyone,
I saw someone mention the new book. I am halfway through it and
wondered if there will be a discussion group for it? I agree that it
will take multiple readings, but boy am I rethinking some things
already. I teach in New York State and we have had to take all the

The reason for the banishment of cozies is the fire safety issue. We
have taken all items not sprayed fire retardent out, nothing hangs
from the ceiling, we are limited as to how much on the walls, no
electrical stuff except district approved, etc. It has been difficult
to make it a warm
That article is about Promethean boards which are another type of

incredible! I use one all the time and next year will have one in my
room. It takes a lot of getting used to - but is addictive. The kids
love it, and there
Thanks everyone to pointing me in the right direction, now I can
follow along. We are just starting to use Interactive Read-Alouds by

Thanks to all that replied. Your ideas were very helpful and I will
