I'm hoping to mine your brains for ideas. As we get into the year, and I'm evaluating reading...I'm stuck. As I always am when trying to determine mastery or assign grades to reading.
In my class, I grade for mastery. An "A" means you've mastered the standards for that quarter. Not that you've "shown effort" or did "extra credit" or "participated in class". So I'm asking you all for input. What is mastery in reading (I'm at the 5th grade level) for upper elementary? What would appear on the grade card? What is measurable? Student attacks words using the rules of phonics? Student can answer questions about the text with 90% accuracy? Student can justify their interpretation with evidence from the text? etc.? What would make you say, "That's a successful reader!"?
