I teach integrated social studies/language arts. Some of the books I use
are:
Fever 1793- The Yellow Fever Epidemic in Philadelphia and companion book

I just finished reading "Cracker! The Best Dog in Viet Nam" by Cynthia
Kadahotah (sp?) She is the author of Kira Kira. I couldn't put it down.
It is about service dogs who were used during the Viet Nam War and their
handlers. It is an historical fiction book. At the back of the book are

Rose Blanche is actually a picture book. It is listed in STW as a
resource to teach inferring. It is about WWII but if your kids won't be
studying WWII until a different grade (our 8th grade studies WWII) it
might be a bit hard to get without some background knowledge (so 6th
graders might have a

Hey all,
I think Jerry Spinelli's Milkweed is a great novel for Holocaust-themed
study/ WWII. It's a layered book that is a bit of a departure from Spinelli's
usual fare---and that can lead to great discussions about how and why his style
is different in this book.

A thought about book collecting: I have been considering what happens to
