One piece I have used is a cutting from Michel Foucault's Panopticism
where he describes his prison idea. It is more than enough to make
them really be struggling readers.

I went to a Kris Tovani workshop this summer in Denver - fantastic by
the way. You may want to think about going to the Rocky Mountain
Literacy Conference next summer. She did a great activity with us
using the Sports Illustrated cover where they did a sports Sistene
Chapel. You can print it from this website.

It was the most fantastic thing. She had each table try to make
meaning of it. Some people knew the sports figures and others knew
the Biblical references. We were using all the strategies that
struggling readers use to make sense. It was a great "aha" for
teachers about background knowledge and then how little scaffolds she
would say could help us make more sense out of it. We used it with
our high school teachers inservice. It was especially good for the
non-communication arts type teachers to get the point of how we make
sense out of whatever kind of text we are asking students to read.
