Are you meaning picture books? I was going to make some recommendations for
chapter books, but as I wondered why you didn't mention the Newbery awards, I
realized maybe you didn't want chapter books.
Just recently I saw information about a (I think) librarian who compiled a list
of the top 100 children's books (which were all picture books). Was the link
on this site? I know I followed it from somewhere. (I'll bet a search engine
could get you there.) Lots of organizations also recommend good children's
books. There's the Coretta Scott King award, which goes to books with an
African-American theme (someone can probably correct me on what exactly it
is--I just have a general sense of it), and I'm pretty sure it includes picture
books. The (free and excellent) Teaching Tolerance magazine usually has book
recommendations. I know I've read other magazines that recommend children's
books too. Did The Reading Teacher recently (a few months ago?) just publish a
list of their top books of the year? And if you go to independent bookstores,
they often have a pamphlet titled "Book Sense" with recommendations of books.
There is a version specifically for children's books that I always enjoy
looking through.

If you actually want chapter books, I think a lot of states have awards--I
know Connecticut does (they're called "Nutmeg Awards"), and there are a whole
bunch of nominees publicized every year. I know I've seen similar lists for
other states. I can't remember which other states, specifically, but I would
think a librarian would probably be able to help you find the information
pretty easily.

I hope this was helpful!

Hi there,

I've been looking for some new books for read-alouds and I've noticed
that there are a lot of Best Illustrated awards, but no awards for
well written books. I understand that most overlap, and that many of
the Caldecott winners are wonderful books, but I'm looking for a
different type of source. Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks,

Shannon
