In response to Katie's question about sight word retention in kindergarten: ?Not all children might be developmentally ready for sight word identification. However Patricia Cuningham's word wall approach could be effective.?The words are cut out in their configuration.? The teacher talks about the individual letters that make up the word and the kids bodily cheer/clap the words- raising arms up for tall letters and bending for letters that have tails. They are?displayed on?a word wall- that should have the alphabet and their names/pictures?displayed. Follow up would be? word hunts using "read around the room" or highlighters? and also a read ,make write sheet-sheet? divided into three columns- they read the word, use a stamper or letter tiles to make the word, and then in the last column they wite the word.?Rainbow write? magnetic letters can be used?to make words and play mix-it fix it. There are many companies that make simple blackline?sight vocabulary books that can reinforce their word knowledge.
