The Northern Hawk-owl I reported last week was still present at 10am and
3:30 pm today on the same snag on the west side of the road in the spruce
bog along Hwy 65, 3.6 miles north of CR 53. This area is about 17-18 miles
north of Nashwauk.

Hello again,
Ive been pondering this question for two days now, and Im having trouble
making up my mind! There are so many good birding areas in the region,
that its tough to pick just one as my most favorite. Having said that, I
will say that my all-time single favorite spot is Itasca State

to be because the weather is dry. They seem to show

Many of you must remember that summer; it was very hot

idea for birders to purchase federal duck stamps AND state fish and

I guess my favorite birding location is Bear Run Nature Preserve in SW
Pennsylvania. Bear Run is the stream that runs under Frank Lloyd
Wright's Fallingwater, the home he built for the Kaufmann family. I grew
up 20 miles away. Bear Run has been protected for many years, so mature

I guess for me the criteria for an enjoyable birding location are
remoteness, uniqueness, and diversity. I also prefer an area with
relatively light birding coverage as you can then explore and make your own
discoveries.

While it would be encouraging to believe that changes on the wintering
area has resulted in the increase of Dickcissels,I doubt that to be the

I am definitely seeing Dickcissels in larger numbers than I have ever seen
them before and in locations that I know that they have not been in the last
five or six years. I believe the abundance of Dickcissels is evidence that
they are no longer being persecuted in southern South America where
