There were close to 100 Loons on the west end of Lake Vermilion yesterday,
Thursday. The fishing must have been good along the edge of the ice in the
bay. The smaller lakes in the area froze over last night.

I just observed a flock of about 20 white winged crossbills in a spruce tree
in my yard. I had heard flocks of what I suspected to be crossbills flying
around in the last couple of weeks, but this was the first time I was able
to locate them with the binoculars. I hope they stay around for the

Early this afternoon the third-cycle Slaty-backed Gull was seen again
at Canal Park, Duluth. Also present were one adult and one second-
cycle Thayer's Gull, a second-cycle Great Black-backed Gull, 300
