Bob Janssen and I hosted a three day sparrow workshop this last weekend. During
the workshop we saw 13 species of sparrows and a total weekend bird list of 80.
These were great numbers when you consider the record breaking hot weather. I

We will meet at 7:30 AM at the Dairy Queen on 169 in Onamia. I anticipate
birding the west side of Mille Lacs Lake, perhaps covering 1-2 other locations
nearby depending upon time. Study your loons!

This morning I took a walk through the two-year-old, 70-acre
Coneflower Prairie here in the Linnaeus Arboretum at Gustavus Adolphus
College in St. Peter and found 19 Le Conte's Sparrows. All of these
birds were in the southern half of this rectangular prairie, and all but

While birding Aitkin County on Saturday and again today, I observed Northern
Shrikes. The observation on Saturday took place about 7 miles northeast of
Aitkin, and this bird was actively hunting sparrows in a brushland
management area. Today I observed a Northern Shrike and a Merlin

in Grand Marais, Cook County found a Spruce Grouse on the Moccasin Trail at

Two Townsend's Solitaires were seen on Sunday, October 10th in and
near Duluth. John Green saw one in Duluth Township at the junction
of the McQuade Road (CR 33) and the Radke Road. Rick Schroeder saw
one on the western end of Skyline Parkway at the scenic overlook that
sits above the cement
Karl Bardon and I had a few interesting non-raptor sightings today,
both from our Lakeside apartment vigil as well as Hawk Ridge. A
single Ross's Goose (our second of the season, the other, 9/22) was
tucked into a flock of 29 Cackling Geese, riding the lakeshore south.
