Already on nests: Canada Geese and Red-tailed Hawks. Two nests with birds
(probably Red-tails) are located at:
1) at Hwy 7 just south of the exit from south bound Hwy 100 in St. Louis Park.
2) at the northbound entrance from Hwy 5 onto Hwy 694 in Oakdale.

Do you know where I might purchase hand-held puppets of birds. I have one
puppet of a Puffin. I use my puffin puppet when I greet members and friends who
have come to worship God on Sunday morning. Many of those so greeted respond
cheerfully.

At 6PM Wednesday there was an adult California Gull at Clear Lake SW of the
town of Alberta in Stevens County. Also at Clear Lake was a 1st-cycle
Glaucous Gull standing on the ice.
Also of note were 2 White-winged Scoters on Shakopee lake in north-central
Chippewa County earlier in the day.

Yesterday's hawk count was slightly slower, with a flight of raptors that
ended relatively early in the day (around 3pm). A noteworthy Dark-eyed Junco
movement was observed, as these cute little guys were hanging out throughout
much of the day, in addition to the new-to-the-season Yellow-bellied
This morning I scoped out the same 3 Lakes Harriet, Calhoun, Nokomis as
yesterday counting Horned Grebes. To my surprise there had been an explosion
of Horned Grebes and the numbers had tripled overnight and the total was now
576 on the lakes. I had to remind myself that it was spring
On my drive home last night, Wednesday, April 13, 2011, I saw a lone Osprey
circling the area where the light pole with the nest used to be. I drive this
route everyday and this is the first time I have seen an Osprey this year in
that area.

At 10:00 about 50 Horned Grebes and one Red-necked Grebe can be seen at the Old
Cedar Ave Bridge by looking out from the parking lot.

We live on Glen Lake (just northwest of the intersection of Hwy 62 and 494). We
see osprey over the lake off and on during most breeding seasons, and I have
often wondered if they are the ones from that nest. This year, I marked my
calendar when I saw a pair riding thermals over this

At 1:00 PM the Grebes were still visible from the Old Cedar Ave Bridge
parking lot. I counted around 100 Horned Grebes, the lone Red-necked Grebe
and 4 or so Ruddy Ducks swimming on the fringes of the group. They are not
too far out, but bringing a scope is a good idea because they are a little
Nice mix of waterfowl today including all three mergansers in one field of view
in my binoculars. That's the first time I can recall ever seeing all three in
one location, let alone associating that closely with one another. There were
also 8 c. loons and one red-necked grebe.

I've noticed a flurry of reports recently wherein the poster mentions a
locality such as a local or county park but fails to say in which county the
site is located. Few, if any of us, know where all of these sites are located
throughout the state. Remembering to include the county name in the
This evening there were 195 Horned, and 1 Eared Grebe on Orchard Lake,
Lakeville. Thankfully the Eared Grebe was considerably closer than the
majority of the Horned Grebes.
Also present were 2 Ruddy Ducks and a few Lesser Scaup.

This evening the first winter male White-winged Scoter was refound on

but I immediately saw, perched in a tree along Sunset

Today was a very blustery day of counting raptors, with the wind gusting up
to 39mph, and temperatures (at Thompson Hill) just maxing out at the
freezing point. Despite the harsh conditions, some raptors did move through
the area. I counted 72 raptors today, which raised our season's total to
