After 18 years of birding, I am contemplating breaking down and
purchasing/carrying a camera. At the very least, it may make rarity
documentation easier:)
As a pastor, keeping this purchase inexpensive is important. Any thoughts?

The new Canon or Nikon super zooms are hard to beat. There zoom is
something like 25mm - 650mm, plus HD video.
They retail for around $400. If thats too much I would look for a used
super zoom like a Canon Power Shot S3IS for example. They have a zoom
range of roughly 25mm to 400mm.
On Thu,
This morning - our final crane count for the year - was 5850 birds. Still a
lot of birds around, but they are dispersing more widely, going as much to the
NE as to the NW. Also, the bulk of the birds moved off the roost in one big
thrust at about 7:20, rather than trickling out over 30-45

Hi Al,
Anything new that would be good for birding with enough resolution and lens
power costs too much. I recommend used. I do not think it really matters what
brand, I use Nikon but they are expensive, worth it to a pro but

Despite the MOU powers that be rejecting my Stevens County Bobwhite record of 2
years ago for the trivial reason that it was on a game farm (elk, not
pheasant!!) and the bad personal funk that that rejection resulted in, I
decided to see what the Iowa Breeding Bird Atlas had found on this
Be warned this could get real expensive real quick :o). Also be warned you got
me going on a favorite topic, so if you have better things to do come back and
read later.

I agree with pretty much everything that Paul has to say about cameras.
DSLRs are really the best way to go. Fast response time, more control and
more tools (lenses, filters, flash rigs, etc.) at your disposal. It's
really important when you are buying a camera to not look at just the body

I have heard good things about KEH http://www.keh.com/ for getting used
equipment in general. On the given day what is available depends on what
people have turned loose of.
Because the sensors on DSLRs are larger than the sensors of point-and-shoot
cameras, the MP rating of the two

There has been a small self-sustaining flock in SE Mn tenaciously
hanging on for many generations. Though I have never personally seen
one myself there. I have spent most of my teens and adult life on the
back-roads of this area in my never ending trout quest. I have had

A Black and Surf Scoter were seen on Lake Waconia today from 4:30pm-4:50pm.
They were still present when I left. They were seen from the public access
on the east side of the lake along county road 155.

I'll have to elaborate on my point-and-shoot recommendation. .. I've
found the camera that takes the best pictures is the one I actually
have with me :-)
I have a Nikon DSLR with 8 or so lenses, flash, extension rings - even
a bellows. I never bring it any where. Why? Because its a royal PIA!
