While birding with Joel Schmidt earlier today (7/26), we located an apparent
family group of 3 blue grosbeaks: an adult male, a subadult male, and a female.
The birds were located at the intersection of 310th St. and 830th Ave, about 2
miles west of Olivia and 1/4 mi N of Hwy 212. The birds wer

This evening starting at around 8:15, I heard the resident pair of Great Horned
Owls hooting back and forth.
I thought they did most of their hooting during their nesting season. What am I
missing here?

While birding with Joel Schmidt this morning in northern Renville county, we
observed an apparent family group of blue grosbeaks. Three different birds
were observed: an adult male, a subadult male, and a female.

I made a loop around the Prairie's Edge Wildlife Drive at Sherburne Refuge this
morning, from approximately 6 a.m. to 7:45 a.m. I recorded 59 species - both
seen and heard. I was surprised by the amount of bird song - were the birds
celebrating the cooler, dryer air too? What an absolutely go
John Hockema and I found Blue Grosbeaks in Pipestone at the intersection of
county road 18 and county road 2. And in Murray Co at the abandoned rock
quarry along county road 4 a few miles east of the county line.

John Hockema and I found 15 Buff-breasted Sandpipers at the sewage ponds in
Edgerton this morning.
For those of you interested in making a Muffin Run there is a good bakery
in town as well.

A decent number of shorebirds departed the area the 24 hours between the
mornings of July 23 and 24 likely before the overnight storms hit, as I checked
areas as the heavy rain was just coming to an end. Since the storm shorebird
numbers have been less.

To go along with yesterday's report at Walker in Cass Co, there was a lone
Buff-breasted Sandpiper this morning on the ballfield at the Park Point
Recreation Area in Duluth.
