After a dismal spring migration so far, today was a significant change, with a
good movement of geese. In the two hours I was counting, I averaged 24 flocks
per hour, with an average of 130 birds/flock, I saw about 6200 geesenot
epic, but respectable. About 80% of these were white fronted,
Junco flocks are surging and Song Sparrows are mixed in.

Lots of birds moving around Benton, Mille Lacs and Sherburne Counties today,
mostly waterfowl, hawks and blackbirds. Canada geese and trumpeter swans
flying every which way. One group of 4 Canada geese had a snow goose with them
- that was at the refuge this morning.

The south winds yesterday and today seemed to blow in many migrants which
changed birding from Saturday to today. Had 8 or so Rough legs on Friday,
a N Shrike today and a handful of Am. Tree Sparrows and Juncos. Canada
Geese were in small to medium flocks everywhere today. New birds today

Around 6 pm I was amazed to see 20 Turkey Vultures flying over the wetlands
in my Plymouth neighborhood.

This afternoon north of Tamarack in eastern Aitkin County there was a Northern
Hawk Owl on CR 6. There also had been one in the same spot on the 18th and 19th
but had not been seen since. A few poles over there was an American Kestrel,
also seen today were Northern Harrier, Canada Goose and Dar
Dozens of meadowlarks arrived at the Agassiz Valley Impoundment today along
with at least 200 or more Canada Geese. We spotted a total of 5 Snowy Owls
and a Great Horned Owl along 190th Street this morning. 4 Northern
Harriers. 5 American Kestrels on Polk Co 67. The first of a dozen

Still pretty frozen up here but some moving water is open. Canada Geese and

Stopped by the causeway yesterday afternoon and saw pretty much the same birds
except there was a red-breasted merganser as well as 2 greater white-fronted
geese mixed in

I spotted a Snowy Owl on the Steele/Dodge county line along a fence line to the
south of 685th St. It is quite a ways out from the road out near three dark
posts that are close together.

Yesterday afternoon there was a merlin in the same area as last year. Last
year I saw one in the same 4 square block area for several weeks. I never saw
two at a time or anything that suggested a nest site. I find it interesting
that the one yesterday was in the same block.

Spotted 2 Snowy Owls at the Agassiz Audubon Center on 190th Street in
Warren yesterday. Sharp-tailed Grouse on the beach ridge, Northern
Harriers, Rough-legged Hawks, Bald Eagles, Swans in the air, a few Snow
Buntings on the roadsides, but mostly Horned Larks. Blizzard Watch tonight.
