Alexander Egan reports:
"A female Harlequin Duck seen outside the mouth of Grand Marais
harbor on both Monday the 15th and Wednesday the 17th. It was smaller
than the goldeneyes that it was foraging with and had a distinct
white circle behind the eye.
Fellow teacher and Snowy Owl magnet, Mike McNab, found a Snowy Owl a few miles
north
of Grove City on a pole along county road 25 about 4:30 this afternoon. I also
saw it and
watched it fly to a pole on 310th St. just 1/10 mile west of 25, and then it
flew off to the
west where I lost track

We have gone back into the cold this week, but it hasn't hampered the
birding -
I saw a flock of unidentified crossbills flying across/down the road on CR 65
on the north end of Vermillion Lake in Cass Co. on 12-16-14. Unfortunately,
they wouldn't land where I could get glass on them.

An aborted attempt to leave the house by car--had to rush back inside for
the binoculars as I was hearing that electric sort of sound that suggests a
flock of crossbills . There must have been 30 to 40 birds in all the color
combinations, drab and bright. I don't know if red crossbills ever consort
