At 4:00 pm today, (10/25) my wife and I encountered 2 Snowy Owls along Hwy 61
at Cutface Creek/Good Harbor Bay in Cook County. One bird was dead in the long
grass west of the creek on the lake side of the mouth

today in Sunset Memorial Cemetery (adjacent to Hillside Cemetery) in NE

On a field trip over to Finland, MN via back roads I was scaring up ever
bigger flocks from the road shoulders or lightly-traveled pavement. I did
not expect them quite so early. Some individuals swept so close to the
windshield I'd start to brake to spare them but they'd sweep to the side.

Spotted a N Shrike just north of Aitkin along HWY 169/210. It was between mile
marker 156 and 157. Seemed to be on the hunt. FOS for me.

Sandhill crane numbers at Sherburne NWR currently - about 7,000. There are
still many birds in the north that haven't migrated down yet, thanks to the
long, warm fall weather.

Hey birders,
While manning the hawkwatch at Bethany Lutheran College in Mankato
yesterday morning I had a single female White-winged Crossbill fly in and
perch cooperatively on a nearby spruce. With Pine Siskin and Purple Finch
also for the day, it makes me wonder what kind of winter we’re head
I had to get out birding on my birthday so I headed to Lake Byllesby this
morning while my wife watched the kids. There were a lot of birds but they were
widely scattered and patchy and it took a little patience and a scope to pick
out the different species.
