After viewing the potential mottled duck at the Rum River
Dam I drove to the Coon Rapids Dam, seeking, in vain, the
long-tailed duck. But did have a fly-over of the brightest,
and whitest, Krider's hawk I have ever seen. No belly

First of all I want to thank all those that have posted information on the
crossbills on various sites. I hadn’t seen a WW Crossbill in years. Gary
Swanson formerly of the C.R. Dam has now started a weekly birding hike and this
is where he took us today to the Blue hill trail at Sherburne
Drew Smith, Tony Hertzel, and I have been studying this bird for the past
hour and we are convinced it is a Mottled Duck. We have had excellent looks
at all the field marks and have seen no signs of hybridization with
Mallard.
The bird is currently sitting on the ice on the south side of the
