eBird does use the GPS on the phone to find your location and track your
distance while birding. If you need to navigate roads, Google Maps is
reliable. When hiking, I like GPS Logger II which can create detailed records
of your walk (or drive.) The Minnesota State Parks recommend Avenza

A new cell phone offers a good excuse to update my GPS capability.
