I have encountered loner hooded merganser ducklings too. However, today I saw
a female with a brood of 1/3-grown young sunning themselves at the edge of a
pond, so apparently family groups also stay together for the long haul.

A Harris’s sparrow visited our ground feeder today. They are scarce here. We
see a Harris’s at the ground feeder, usually a single bird, about once every
five or six years.

A prothonotary warbler spotted by Doris Petrie and photographed by Pat Klett
was the highlight of today’s Gateway Trail/Highway 96 bird walk. The bird was
present at a small pond on the west side of the trail a little north of Highway
96 (across from a large pond and picnic table).

This morning I watched a Cooper’s hawk pursue a female bluebird. With the hawk
on its tail the bluebird darted into a nest box. The hawk clung to the box at
the nesting hole and beat its wings, apparently trying to flush the bluebird.
The bluebird didn’t oblige.

Thanks to David Greening, the Gateway Trail warbler has been properly

A cerulean warbler was singing and foraging in a cottonwood here (Stillwater
area) this morning.
There is a notable dearth of tree swallows and phoebes here this year.
Anecdotal evidence suggests the phoebe scarcity is a continuing effect of last
year's April and May sn
I’m sorry I forgot to mention the location: Washington County near Stillwater.
