There have been 3-4 Caspian Terns at Lizzie Lake, Cass County, the last
week (June 13th - June 21st). This location is 25 miles south of the known
breeding colony in Leech Lake, and it is unlikely that Caspian Terns would
choose a small lake like Lizzie to nest, but it has been fun to watch the
A history of mining has certainly had an impact on the character of the
birdlife around Hibbing. My map showed much of the area as spoiled
or distorted. But these areas are still worth visiting. I saw some
interesting birds there late last week.

I've been seeing interesting postings from Lake Superior this spring. So
this afternoon I visited Duluth and walked about three miles of beach. I
started at the parking lot at Minnesota Ave and 12th St. and walked south.
Shorebirds included:
Spotted Sandpiper - 6
Willet - 1
Whimbrel - 15
I was birding northern Carlton County near Sawyer this morning. While
listening for rails and bitterns in the marsh at the north end of Hall Central
Rd. an adult Red-headed Woodpecker flew overhead and landed in the
aspen forest - replanted in 1982 according to the sign - along Moorhead
Rd.,

Today I walked a 3 mile stretch of swampy forest along the Soo Line Trail
southeast of Barnum, Carlton County. Highlights were 10+ singing Golden-
winged Warblers, and a female Brewster's Warbler.
