I departed the viewing platform on the MN side of Salt Lake a little after 9:00
PM without having seen the gull-billed tern reported yesterday. As I posted
earlier, I had attempted earlier from the west side with no observation either.
In the late afternoon, I drove west and scouted the chain
I was there from 1:30 - 3:30 today - no terns. Since 3:30 I've been searching
a string of larger water bodies (that might hold terns) about 10-15 mi W of
Salt Lake. Reports indicated that the terns headed west when they departed
Salt Lake - so I thought this was worth a try.

My student who alerted me to the presence of the booming male Greater Prairie
Chicken 4 mi N and 1 mi W of Pipestone last March, just informed me that he
recently saw a hen prairie chicken with a brood in the same vicinity!It

I observed (yesterday) a male Greater Prairie Chicken in Lincoln County, 4 mi
North and 1 mile West of Pipestone about 100 yds south of the intersection of
60th Ave and 151st St. The bird was booming in the middle of the road. I saw
no others in the vicinity.

I observed the purple sandpiper at the reported location from about 4:15 - 5:00
PM this afternoon (Monday, 17 Oct 2011). I took several photos, including a
flight photo with a nice look at the dark tail and rump. I posted several on

I have 2 recent favorite encounters - white-winged junco in the parking lot at
Stockade Lake in the Black Hills - very interested in its reflection in the
chrome on the vehicle. The 2nd is a cardinal in the parking lot at the Boat
Ramp at Oakwood Lakes State Park - it always ends up fighting its
