Bart Anderson saw a Townsend's Solitaire on the 27th at Good Harbor
Bay, four miles southwest of Grand Marais. Bart also reported a
Smith's Longspur on the 26th at the Lutsen sewage ponds, and a male
Harlequin Duck at Agate Bay in Two Harbors on the 24th.

I spent some time yesterday and today hiking, birding, and camping along the
North Shore with my family. The 2 days turned up 71 species with several
highlights:
- Snow Goose (2), Ross's Goose (1), Cackling Goose (several) - Two Harbors golf
course yesterday, also Cackling Geese (3) at the M
This weekend, Nov 3-4, the Minn Birding Weekends group observed several
species of interest between Duluth and Grand Marais, In addition to the
Inca Dove in Two Harbors, the highlights were:
- only 2 scoter individuals: 1 Surf Scoter in Grand Marais harbor and 1
Black Scoter in Hovland
- Long-t
Beautiful, sunny days for birding along the North Shore, Duluth to Gooseberry.
Saw 39 species with these highlights:
numerous DARK-EYED JUNCOS, AMERICAN TREE SPARROWS, both WHITE- and RED-
BREASTED NUTHATCHES, RED-TAILED HAWKS, and BALD EAGLES along route
1 male, two female PINE GROSBEAKS - Con

add at least one bird to each of my 87 Minnesota County lists. Nervous about
adding to my already semirespectable totals in Lake and Cook, we decided to
head north for a 3-day extravaganza along the shore. My persona

Point but nothing much there. So we headed to Wisconsin Point. There we found

I took a break from homework and visited the north shore this weekend with my
parents. We saw around sixty species, with the following being our better
finds -

Yesterday Sharon and I birded the North Shore from Two Harbors to
Grand Marais with Dave and Sarah Grosshuesch. We found a Red-bellied
Woodpecker on the west side of Beaver Bay, in the small neighborhood
south of Highway 61. It was near the junction of Slater Drive and
Ruth Street. There was
Though the birding has been generally very slow in NE Minn this fall,
even through last Friday the 28th, things seemed to improve
considerably over the weekend along the North Shore, with a few
rarities and increased numbers of individuals of more expected birds.

yesterday on the "Ides of October." We subsequently received a report
of an adult male Harlequin Duck at the mouth of the Cross River near
Schroeder in Cook County--one of the few places we did not stop between
Hovland and Duluth.
My family and I took a one-day trip along the North Shore
yesterday (Friday, October 29). Our better sightings
included-
HORNED GREBE - 1 at Park Point
GREATER SCAUP - Park Point
SURF SCOTER - 1 at Paradise Beach
WHITE-WINGED SCOTER - 3 at Grand Marais, 8 at Paradise Beach
NORTHERN GOSHAWK - 1 at

and saw a few things. At dawn there was one Short-eared Owl over
Lake Superior at Good Harbor Bay, and another came in off the lake at

Bob Russell reports that yesterday Bill Howe of New Mexico saw a
gray-phase GYRFALCON at the mouth of the Knife River in Lake County.
Bob found a winter-plumage LARK BUNTING at the southwest corner of the

At the Two Harbors golf course we
Sharon and I birded along the North Shore today from Stoney Point up
to Silver Bay and found a few interesting things:
Cackling Goose - 1 at mouth of Knife River
Bonaparte's Gull - 2 at Burlington Bay in Two Harbors
Yellow-bellied Sapsucker - 28 counted throughout the day
Boreal Chickadee - 1 nea

for the Iceland Gull in Two Harbors. As I was driving up I found a few rafts

My mind and hands did not work together as they should. We saw 3

I headed up to Duluth & the North Shore birding with Rick Schroeder.
Visability at times was muted by the fog, but birding
was rewarding. Birds seen included:
White-winged Scoter (7 on the harbor at the bus turn out on Park Point; 1 under
the docks at the marina at Knife River

Rich Peet and I headed north to see what we could see, (or hear), as we
were out to record calls of birds not found around the cities. Duluth
was our destination until we found winds from the south and the harbor
covered in deep fog. We zipped right up to Stony Point, where there were
only a few
