A pair of Surf Scoters was observed at about 9:00AM today while birding
at Hok-Si-La Park, Goodhue County. They were with a raft of Ruddy Ducks.
They were very near the shore when first spotted, and swam further out
as we watched them. When we looked for them again in the same area at

This morning there were 4 Surf Scoters on Crane Lake, northern St Louis
County.

The 2 Surf Scoters previously reported by Fred Lesher were still at the
downriver end of Lake Pepin, visible from the "stone wall" pulloff today,
Saturday 12/11.
Unfortunately, I still find the state line situation here baffling. I can
safely say the birds were seen swimming on either side of
Wednesday AM there were two Surf Scoters & one C. Loon
seen from the rest stop with "new" stone wall at the
south end of L. Pepin.
"Birders Without Borders" (BWB) studied the scoters
for 45 minutes with 30X scopes at 1/3-1/2 mile from
two vantage points.. We tried to make White-winged

Forest Strnad and I checked out some of our area lakes this cold afternoon
and found a good variety of waterfowl on a few of our
lakes.
Roberds Lake:
200+ Hooded Mergansers (from the road without optics, I thought they were
coots!)
1 Ring-necked Duck
French Lake:
2 Horned Grebes
1 Pie
Two Surf Scoters were found today (6 Oct) on Wigwam Bay at Mille Lacs
Lake. Look near the rocky breakwater by the intersection of county road 25
and highway 169. A late Indigo Bunting was at Picard Point (east side of
the lake in Aitkin County).

On Saturday, I found two Surf Scoters off of Diamond Point on Lake
Bemidji which is just north of the Bemidji State University campus. The
birds were visible as well from the eastern side of Lake Bemidji off the
state bike tail which runs along the lake. They associated with a flock
of Bonaparte'
