On Monday (3/16) two Red-winged Blackbirds showed up at our feeders in central Otter Tail County. By the afternoon, there were seven (today, more than a dozen), plus a single (now 2) Common Grackle. Wonderful to have that continuous racket of spring sound in the backyard. We're experiencing a nice collision of seasons, with Repolls, Siskins, Purple Finches, and Juncos feeding alongside spring migrant blackbirds.

There was also a notable local influx of American Robins on 3/16. We also saw a flawlessly beautiful male Northern Harrier yesterday.

Today (3/17), we saw our first Eastern Bluebirds (2) of the season.

There is very little open water here and still lots of snow, but our local Canada Geese have staked out territories on frozen ponds, and they know from past experience if they honk loudly and fervently enough, eventually that ice will melt. You gotta love the eternal hopefulness of Spring!
