I bring in all seeds and put out only Safflower seeds. Starlings and Grackles
hate it. But Cardinals and other finches like it. Not sure if cowbirds can eat
it. Their beaks are thicker. We always have cowbirds messing with Warbler and
other songbird nest. But I love watching Orioles and Red Wing
We’ve had a male here at our farm off n on for couple weeks. No bison to follow
so they usually are here for the summer. They’ve been here for years.
Today we have an abundance of juncos.

That so interesting to consider, cowbirds following the bison herds. I’ve
always wondered why the cowbirds would lay their eggs in other birds nests.

Originally they apparently co-evolved with bison and it has been
hypothesized they developed their parasitism as a mechanism to breed and
leave their young behind as they followed the bison.

Unfortunately, we have had cowbirds in our backyard every summer for years.
Same with grackles, who turned up a few days ago. No cowbirds yet, though -
at least I haven't spotted any. On the other hand, we seem to have had
fewer starlings in recent summers than previously. Knock wood. ;-)

About two weeks ago, a couple of Red-Winged Blackbirds started showing
up at the feeders and for the past two days now there is a Brown-Headed
Cowbird frequenting our feeders as well. It's been below zero here at
night and low teens for highs. Not sure if they have been around all
winter or jus

Mark Palas posed a comment that suggested cowbird control might be
considered more seriously than it has, because of how man's activities
exacerbate their negative effect on host species. A classic case of how
this approach has been successful has been in the management of the
endangered Kirtland'
