Subject: Dakota Cty birding, 3/17 & 18

Yesterday in the mid to late morning, the northwest end of Lake Byllesby was
filled with many duck species Hundreds of Snow Geese, including blue
morph, and about 180 WF Geese flew overhead. Most of the Snow and WF Geese
didn't land, or landed for only a brief time in the water. Three other
birders saw much of the waterfowl and a number of Ross's Geese in the Snow
Goose flocks that did not land, before a fourth birder and I arrived. We all
heard and saw one Sandhill Crane fly over. Today, I didn't get to Byllesby
until mid afternoon, when all was quiet and empty.

I also found the following in Dakota Cty:

Western Meadowlarks 2: Heard and seen behind St. Mark's Church, entrance to
a road west of 56 just past the church, about 1/2 mile north of the 56/88
intersection.
Large flocks of Horned Larks, scattering in the air, due to a N. Harrier

Snow Geese 30; WF Geese 15, 5:15 pm: With enormous flocks of mixed ducks
and C. Geese (reported in the area today by Derek Bakken) in the flooded
fields north of 47, west of 85 (Goodwin Ave.).

Tundra Swans 35; WF Geese 20, and Mallards: In a flooded field just
north of Cannon Falls and hwy 86, viewed from northbound hwy 85, looking
east. The swans were close enough to ID easily.

I also had one "Oregon" Junco at my feeders today.
