Today, my wife and I found a female American Three-toed Woodpecker in the
"Old Hwy 6 Bog" north of Deer River. (To the best of my knowledge, there
has only been one report of this species in the state all winter season; in
Lake of the Woods County.) To get there, in Deer River, take Hwy 6 north
and go about 4 miles (from Hwy 2). At .3 miles past CR 19, take a right
and follow the road north until you reach the end of the plowing just past
the last driveway. It is legal to park here, and you have to walk through
the snow about .65 miles to the spot where the woodpecker was at. There
was a snag and a number of live trees with evidence of foraging. If you
decide to try this, you'll see the tracks where we went into the woods at
the west to see the bird. We also saw White-winged Crossbills (~15),
Boreal Chickadees (2), and Gray Jays (2) in the same area.
