Owls of Three of El Salvador's

Protected Natural Areas

By Jane West

US Fish and Wildlife Service

Do you love owls? Are you interested in Central America? Jane will talk about
Mottled Owls, Spectacled Owls, Pacific Screech-owls, Ferruginous Pygmy-owls and
Whiskered Screech-owls that she studied in El Salvador.

Jane West will be presenting information about a project she has been working
on titled "Occurrence and Population Estimates of Owls in Three of El
Salvador's Protected Natural Areas." As a volunteer, she works with El
Salvador's Ministry of the Environment in three of the country's protected
areas (cloud forest, mid-elevation forest and floodplain forest).

Thirteen species of owls have been recorded in the literature for the country
of El Salvador, with five of the species being either endangered or threatened.
Jane has spent a month each year, over a period of seven years working on the
project and has heard eight species of owls and recorded vocalizations of four
species.
