This afternoon John Hockema, Dave Bartkey, and I came across 157 Tundra Swans on Round lake in southeastern Renville County. After not seeing any flocks in southern MN since late March, it was a bit odd coming across a lake seemingly full of these birds. But perhaps even more interesting was that many of the birds appeared to be paired off with some pairs sitting on reed mounds reminiscent of nests. It would be very interesting to see how long these birds stay at this location.

Another interesting observation this afternoon occurred on the south side of Mud Lake, which is a few miles south of Round Lake. We observed a Winter Wren creeping up the side of a tree trunk, doing an excellent imitation of a Brown Creeper. We then saw the bird fly up into the crown of a tree, 25-30 feet up. This is the highest above the ground any of us has ever seen a Winter Wren.
