Le Sueur County Birding Day

Field Trip Report

Enjoyed a great day of birding with a group in Le Sueur County today. We
observed 14 species of Waterfowl, including 100s of Greater White-fronted Geese
observed in flight during the morning. All the lakes without aerators were
still frozen, but there was little snow cover in the fields and many had small
pools of standing water. The best spots for Waterfowl were Gorman lake, which
has a large area of open water and a flooded field on the North side of CR 148.
Scotch Lake also had an area of open water, but not many birds. Here are a
few of the species we observed today:
Greater White-fronted Goose
Cackling Goose
Wood Duck
Gadwall
American Wigeon
Northern Pintail
Green-winged Teal
Redhead
Ring-necked Duck
Lesser Scaup
Common Goldeneye
Hooded Merganser
Common Merganser
Wild Turkey
Great Blue Heron
Osprey
Northern Harrier
Sharp-shinned Hawk
Killdeer
Great Horned Owl
Eastern Phoebe
Horned Lark
Eastern Bluebird
Red-winged Blackbird
