We just now happened upon a Northern Hawk Owl along highway 64! This bird is
in Hubbard County, marking my 245th species in the county! I am pretty
flippinâ

I relocated the Northern Hawk Owl first reported yesterday by Don Kienholz. It
was on the
tops of one of the pine trees right next to the road by the entrance to the
road maintenance
garages (Riley Rd ... just off Jean Duluth Rd ... north side of road). For

A co-worker reported seeing a Northern Hawk Owl today late morning on the Riley
Road. The bird was just west of Jean Duluth road in a Spruce tree on the north
side of Riley Road. Riley Road is by the Duluth soccer fields and the tree farm
for the city. This bird may have already been reporte
Along Jean Duluth Rd. between CR 259 and CR 286 ar 4:35 pm. This is several
miles south of the Kelly J Ranch bird, so is likely a different hawk owl. ( We
could not refind the Kelly J bird, but others saw it at least as late as 2 pm.)

Saw and photographed a Northern Hawk Owl towards the end of Jean Duluth Road
around
11:15 this morning. It was perched in the tallest pine which is right in the
middle of Kelly J's
driveway, on the dead branches that extend skyward.
Here are my photos of its morning preen ... in the sun! Quite
Today I spotted the Northern Hawk Owl once again that had been seen in
Hutchinson previously. I believe the last record of him before today was
January 17th. He was seen on his favorite pole this morning at
approximately 10:30am near the intersection of Tagus and 220th street.

A Northern Hawk Owl was seen by Warren Nelson and Butch Ukura at approx
12 noon today. The location was 7.5 miles west of Floodwood, Mn on HWY 2 on
the south side of the road.

Late this afternoon I took a short ride north of town and found a
NORTHERN HAWK OWL. From the stoplight in Aitkin, go north on Minnesota
Avenue and County Road 1 for 8 and 1/10 miles to the junction of Osprey

We had a NORTHERN HAWK-OWL in Sax-Zim bog this evening from 6:00 to
6:10 pm. It was actively hunting on both sides of the road 2.3 miles
north of the train tracks on McDavitt Rd. A cooperative male
BLACK-BACKED WOODPECKER was in the same area.

Hawk Ridge counter Karl Bardon spotted a perched Northern Hawk Owl near the
main overlook at Hawk Ridge about 10 minutes ago. The bird is still there
and is viewable from the main overlook. Staff will be keeping an eye on it.

Coming back from Chisholm, Mn. today my wife and I saw a Northern Hawk
Owl 1.3 miles north of the Jct of Hwy 169&Aitkin Cty Rd. 18. The bird was
in a small birch then flew to a Jack pine right on 169.

I was surprised by a Northern Hawk Owl flying in front of my face at Cty Rds
18 and 5 in Aitkin County. It was dusk and I'd stopped to look for the
Short-eared Owls reported earlier. The owl stopped at the pole in front of me,
then continued east along 18. No other owls.
Nothing else of note
As of today there are now 96 reported Northern Hawk Owls that have been
reported from the late Fall season of 2009 to March 17th 2010.
So far there are two known locations of Northern Hawk Owls that are looking to
nest in northern Minnesota based on copulations, food transfers and
vocalizations
As the winter season is coming to close this might be the last update of
Northern Hawk Owls in northern Minnesota. As of right now there has been 91
reported Northern Hawks in northern Minnesota this 2009/2010 winter season. I
have another 2 Northern Hawk Owls that have not been added to the m

Well I am sure after Christmas birders will be making trips to view winter
birds either in Aitkin County, St. Louis and Lake Counties.
So far 40 Northern Hawk Owls have been reported this late fall - winter
season!! Aitkin County is reporting good number of Hawk Owls and it look like
the 3-4 N

A Northern Hawk Owl was seen this afternoon at 1:00 p.m. east of Deerwood, Mn.
on Hwy. 210 approximately 300 ft. east of Hwy. 210 & Co. Rd. 32 intersection.

This afternoon, Bill Stauffer and I birded around parts of the county.
We found a NORTHERN HAWK OWL sitting on a pole right at the junction of
Aitkin County Road 18 and Aitkin County Road 5. It was a very obliging
bird and was still there when we left. We also found a flock of about
two dozen

way up) in a front yard along Mary Ln. just north of Peggy Ln. Also, to
add to my directions posted earlier, after exiting off Hwy. 14 on Lor
